It's a cliché, but 2021 really was one of the most action-packed, unpredictable years of competition in the League of Legends European Championship. We were left shell shocked when G2 Esports failed to qualify for the World Championship in a truly stunning upset during the Summer Playoffs. We saw MAD Lions, one of the youngest teams in the competition, utterly dominate their competition. Fnatic, meanwhile, struggled through a truly rollercoaster year, with an unexpected role-swap proving that thinking outside the box can have strong results. With surprising results come some truly spectacular stats – and we’ve pulled out some of the most impressive numbers from throughout the last 12 months.
You'll have seen all this play out on the Summoner's Rift throughout the year – indeed, LEC viewers racked up over 77 million hours watching the action, smashing 2020's viewing total by nearly five million hours. And almost 850,000 fans like you tuned in to see the fateful Summer Playoffs match between Fnatic and G2 that sent shockwaves out across Europe with its atomic upset. Elias "Upset" Lipp himself had a heck of year, posting the highest KDA of Summer (9.15) and tying with MAD's Matyáš "Carzzy" Orság for most kills in a single game across the entire year (14).
We're about to see it all unfold again when the LEC returns on 14 January 2022, with some fascinating new rosters, a brand new team, and renewed energy from each and every one of our LEC line-ups. But before then, let's look back on some of the most fascinating numbers from the 2021 season, and some of the incredible digits posted by the players that make the LEC as exciting as it is.
