**TL;DR**
Carlos Rodríguez engaged in activity detrimental to the best interest of the League and Riot Games in violation of the LEC Rules. Consequently, he is suspended from holding any managerial or operational position with a team or organization in a Riot-sanctioned competition, or participation therein until November 13, 2022. In addition, Carlos Rodríguez is required to complete: (i) sensitivity training, and (ii) executive training as detailed below. The training must be provided by an independent third-party that is unaffiliated with G2 Esports, the League, or Carlos Rodríguez.
**Timeline/Facts**
On September 17, 2022, Carlos Rodríguez posted a Tweet with a video showing himself at a celebration with Andrew Tate, stating *“yesterday we celebrated G2’s world championship”*. The tweet rapidly garnered attention because of the views expressed by Andrew Tate, which have been described as *“extreme misogyny”* by the public press. In a follow-up Tweet, Carlos Rodríguez posted
*“Nobody will ever be able to police my friendships
I draw my line here
I party with whoever the fuck I want”.*
On September 18, 2022, G2 Esports announced that its Supervisory Board had mutually agreed with Carlos Rodríguez that he would take eight weeks of leave as CEO and suspend his earnings during that time.
In view of the above, on September 19, 2022, the League of Legends European Championship Limited (“LEC”) opened an investigation. This resulted in the opening of formal disciplinary proceedings against Carlos Rodríguez on September 20, 2022, for having potentially breached the LEC 2022 Season, Official Rules (“LEC Rules”). Carlos Rodríguez was invited to submit his statement on the above described facts, which he did on September 27, 2022.
On September 26, 2022, Carlos Rodríguez posted on Twitter a video by means of which he shared his voluntary intention to step down as a CEO of G2 Esports.
**Relevant Rules**
Art. 9.2.5 of the League of Legends European Championship, 2022 Season, Official Rules:
*“Team Managers/Members may not give, make, issue, authorise or endorse any statement or action having, or designed to have, an effect prejudicial or detrimental to the best interest of the League, Riot Games or its affiliates, or League of Legends, as determined in the sole and absolute discretion of the League.”*
**Ruling**
The LEC Rules apply to Team Managers and Team Members of the LEC participating teams. As a shareholder and CEO of G2 Esports, Carlos Rodríguez qualifies as a Team Manager and is therefore subject to said rules. In particular, the LEC Rules provide that Team Managers/Members may not, amongst other things, undertake any action that may have an effect prejudicial or detrimental to the best interest of the League, Riot Games or its affiliates.
By publicly associating on social media Andrew Tate, known for his misogynistic views, with himself, G2 Esports and the LEC, Carlos Rodríguez engaged in an activity which was detrimental to the best interest of the League and Riot Games.
Consequently, Carlos Rodríguez breached Article 9.2.5 of the LEC Rules.
When evaluating the applicable sanction, the LEC took into consideration all the circumstances surrounding the case, including all the aggravating and mitigating factors. In particular, the LEC considered as mitigating circumstances the prompt mutual agreement between G2 Esports’ Supervisory Board and Carlos Rodríguez, by means of which the latter would take unpaid leave as CEO for eight weeks, as well as his announcement to voluntarily step down as the CEO of G2 Esports.
In view of all of the above, Carlos Rodríguez is suspended from holding any managerial or operational position with a team or organization in a Riot-sanctioned competition, or participation therein, for eight weeks retroactively starting on September 18, 2022, to take into consideration the time he has already been suspended for by virtue of the decision passed by G2 Esports’ Supervisory Board (see above, under Timeline/Facts).
In addition, Carlos Rodríguez is required to complete: (i) sensitivity training, and (ii) executive training, and provide evidence of completion to the LEC, within 120 days of this ruling, but no later than before his return to the Riot-sanctioned esports ecosystem in any official capacity.
The training must be provided by an independent third-party that is unaffiliated with G2 Esports, Riot Games, or Carlos Rodríguez. To ensure that the training provider is qualified, Carlos Rodríguez must previously submit the proposed provider to the League for approval, including evidence of qualifications such as educational certificates, training and experience.
