2022 marks the 10-year anniversary of the League Championship Series, and we’re excited to begin the celebration!
Although it’s gone by many names over the years, our premier North American League of Legends competition held its [first regular season match][1] on February 7, 2013 — Counter Logic Gaming forced a surrender vote out of Team SoloMid after 39 minutes, thanks in part to Doublelift’s seven-kill Urgot. Since that day, the league expanded from eight teams to 10, created permanent franchise partners, and held its finals in some of the most storied performance venues on the continent.
Through it all — amid the rise and fall of whole organizations, the entire lifecycle of player careers (beginning, ending, and in some cases, rebirth), the influx of superstar talent from abroad alongside a rededication to Academy and Amateur spaces — you’ve been with us. The LCS exists today because of your fandom, whether it started today, yesterday, or ten years ago. With your help, we’ve grown into one of the most watched competitions in North America, proving that League of Legends esports is not only the game of the future, it is the sport of our present.
So in honor of our 10-year anniversary, the LCS will be offering a variety of activities and content across the 2022 competitive season. Old faces will appear on broadcast as we look back on iconic LCS moments, and expect special episodes of our LCS shows to air throughout the season. Our programming will culminate at the 2022 LCS Championship Weekend — location and date to be announced in the coming months — a perfect domestic capstone as all eyes turn to Worlds 2022 in North America.
During this tremendous year for LoL Esports in North America, we hope you’ll continue watching along with us as new legacies are made, and old ones continue. Here’s to the next 10 years of LCS, and all the years after.
The 2022 season kicks off with the LCS Lock In Tournament at 2 pm PT Friday, January 14.
